What is shea body butter and what does it do?

My Grandma in Ghana and those that came before her used Shea butter on the body. It is relatively inexpensive in it’s raw form but I have to admit, it does have an acquired scent and for a time it was just something that we bought when we went to Ghana but would probably end up in the cupboard or given away.

Consumerism over the years has also contributed to the lack of interest in our natural resource, and we have bought into the promises of brand names who have offered to “turnback the hands of time”, or “stop the ageing process” through their moisturisers, but let’s face it when you read the label of ingredients, most of it is full of additives and preservatives and do you really know what they are?

That is why half a decade ago, I turned back to my old friend that my Grandma introduced me to all those years ago and mixed them with other ingredients such as coconut oil, almond oil and essential oils to emulate the big brands but offer an all natural alternative. I just wanted to know exactly I was using on my body.

But what is shea body butter and what exactly does it do?

To the information part.

Shea body butter is extracted from the nuts of the shea tree native to West Africa. It has deeply moisturising and nourishing properties and the magic of shea butter lies in its high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids, such as vitamins A,E and F. These nutrients work together to hydrate the skin, improve elasticity and promote a youthful appearance. Its luxurious texture makes it an excellent moisturiser, particularly for dry or rough areas like the elbows, knees and heels.

One of its standout features is its ability to form a protective barrier on the skin, locking in moisture while shielding against environmental damage, such as harsh weather conditions and pollutants. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal for soothing irritated or sensitive skin, helping calm redness, itching and even minor rashes.

Shea body butter also supports the skin’s natural healing process, making it a popular remedy for reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks over time. For those with mature skin, its antioxidant content helps combat free radicals, reducing the signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Whether used daily as part of a skincare routine or as an occasional treat, shea body butter is a versatile and effective product that caters to a variety of skin needs. Packed with natural goodness, it provides hydration, protection and rejuvenation in one luxurious package, making it a must-have for healthy, radiant skin.

So there you have it. The great thing is, the results are instant and you don’t have to lather yourself with the cream, a little goes a long way.
